In a socialist democracy, power must be socialized; the people have the capacity to construct the revolutionary project, with their daily work and criticism of what is poorly done. This is why the First Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, is in Sancti Spiritus, leading a comprehensive visit by the Secretariat and its support staff, underway since January 19.
The anti-Cuban press speaks of elites, but it is Díaz-Canel and other members of the Secretariat, who are in modest neighborhoods and rural areas to understand the problems there, listening to residents and emphasizing the opportunity they have to join in making change.
His first stop was the Agramonte neighborhood in the Jesús María People’s Council, to review how much has been done since the 8th Congress, in this community in transformation.
There, the president visited the Sports and Recreation Complex, a medical office and produce market.
Next, Díaz-Canel moved on to Yaguajay, where he toured the Caonao Valley Agroindustrial Grain Enterprise. He was accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, the Central Committee’s Secretary of Organization and Cadre Policy. They visited Batey Colorado, one of the four production poles affiliated with the company, which specializes in grain production and has mechanical irrigation.
There, Juan José González, the Ministry of Agriculture’s provincial representative, reported on the diversification of production. “Of the 5,214 hectare under cultivation, 3,000 are devoted to various crops: sorghum, beans, corn, root vegetables, fruits, greens… for the state wholesaler. They also deliver 800,000 liters of milk annually.”
The delegation also visited the center’s rustic greenhouses, where they confirmed the quality of productions and the export capacity being developed.
Díaz-Canel and Morales Ojeda then visited the Melanio Hernández sugar mill in Tuinucú, where they conversed with workers about the plant’s electrical generation system based on organic waste and the sale of energy to the Electric Company, essential to boosting the mill’s efficiency.
At the end of the afternoon, Díaz-Canel and Morales Ojeda met with professors and students of José Martí University of Sancti Spíritus, where they listened to the experiences and contributions being made to the agricultural and industrial sectors in the province.
Rogelio Polanco, another member of the Secretariat and head of the Central Committee’s Ideological Department, met with university students in the morning, as well, and visited media outlets, the Casa de la Guayabera, the Colmenita Espirituana children’s theater project and the Oscar Fernandez Morera Gallery.
