On July 26, 1953, 160 young revolutionaries under the leadership of Fidel Castro carried out an attack on the Moncada army barracks in Santiago de Cuba. They sought to spark a mass uprising to restore constitutional government after a coup by US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista. The fighters were defeated that day, but their action marked the opening of the Cuban Revolution which triumphed on January 1, 1959.This year’s annual celebration of July 26 is a very special one. It will be the first since the release of all the Cuban Five. Our movement in New York and New Jersey was an important part of the worldwide struggle to free the Cuban Five since their arrest and frame-up in 1998. The release of the three remaining Cuban Five prisoners on December 17, 2014 was part of the announcement by Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro of the beginning of negotiations toward the normalization of US-Cuba relations. This registers a defeat for the US government in face of the isolation of US anti-Cuba policies across the Americas and worldwide. It is a ringing victory for Cuba’s defense of it’s sovereignty and revolutionary internationalist principles. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of our beloved brother Malcolm X. Malcolm was among the earliest and most uncompromising defenders of the Cuban Revolution in the United States. In holding this year’s celebration at the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, the preserved site of Malcolm’s assassination, we are paying tribute to this exemplary revolutionary leader. A meaningful normalization of US-Cuban relations is only possible with the end of all remaining US economic and travel sanctions; US respect for Cuba’s right to self-determination and sovereignty; and the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Cuban territory at Guantanamo. The events of December 17, 2014 put the struggle for these goals on a stronger footing.
