The United States continues to protect terrorists

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has learned with deep concern the decision of a judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, issued on May 1, 2024, which acquitted Alexander Alazo Baró of the four charges against him, as a result of the terrorist attack perpetrated by him against the Cuban Embassy in the United States in the early morning of April 30, 2020, for which he alleged insanity conditions of the perpetrator.

Alazo, a Cuban-born individual who has lived in the United States since 2010, fired all 32 rounds from a magazine of a semi-automatic rifle ak-47 into Cuba’s diplomatic headquarters in Washington, causing extensive property damage to the exterior and interior of the building and endangering the lives of several people inside the building.

Alazo himself confessed that he intended to shoot whatever was in front of him, including human beings if they had been in his line of fire. This was a terrorist act in the capital city of the United States against a permanent diplomatic headquarters.

At the time of his arrest, Alazo’s regular association with the Doral Jesus Worship Center in Miami Dade, where people with known behavior in favor of aggression, hostility, violence and extremism against Cuba meet, was well known.

The terrorist was arrested immediately at the scene and the U.S. government charged him with four offenses under the U.S. Federal Code. However, it has been unable to qualify the action for what it is: a terrorist act.

The politicization by the United States of the attack perpetrated against the Cuban Embassy in Washington was evident from the very first moments. This is demonstrated by the lengthy process of analyzing proven facts.

Four years after the events and in a criminal process full of opacity, the judge accepted a joint report from the Prosecutor’s Office and the defense of the terrorist Alexander Alazo Baró, which presents the perpetrator as someone who, at the time of the events, was not in possession of his mental faculties and, therefore, declares him innocent.

This decision sends a dangerous message of impunity to those who intend to take violent actions against diplomatic headquarters in Washington.

On September 24, 2023, in the evening hours, an individual threw two Molotov cocktails over the perimeter fence of the Cuban Embassy in Washington and against the front facade of that facility. It is an event that occurred three years and five months after the attack perpetrated by Alazo. Even U.S. law enforcement authorities claim not to know the perpetrator or have details of what happened.

These terrorist acts are a direct result of the aggressive policy and discourse of the U.S. government against Cuba, of the permanent incitement to violence and hatred by U.S. politicians and anti-Cuban extremist groups.

Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, was received by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the Grand Kremlin Palace, in a meeting that ratified the solid historical relations and continuity that have characterized both nations.
The Cuban Head of State delivered to the Russian leader a letter of congratulations from the leader of the Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, after his re-election as President of the Russian Federation, in addition to conveying the recognition of the Cuban people, Party and Government.
The meeting was the culmination of his intense work agenda in Moscow, capital to which he arrived on May 7, on a working visit, to participate in the activities for the 79th anniversary of the Victory Day of the Great Patriotic War, and to take part -for the first time in person- in the Supreme Council of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Regarding the latter, the Cuban leader described it as “an experience for learning and for appreciating all its potentialities, a space for coordination among a group of nations that are friends of Cuba, with which we have enormous possibilities for exchanging, complementing and moving forward”.
He considered it a privilege to be here on such a significant date as Victory Day, which is important not only for the Russian people, but for all humanity.
In the cordial exchange, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that “we always support the Cuban people and are against US attempts to restrict Cuba’s development, and harm it economically through sanctions.
“The Cuban people, for decades are struggling and strong,” the Russian leader noted. “Once again I am glad to see you, welcome.”
Previously, the Cuban President had participated, together with Putin, in the military parade for the 79th anniversary of the Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War, held in the Red Square of this capital. Then the heads of state took part in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Moscow.— “It will be the first time that President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez personally attends the Supreme Council of the Eurasian Union, but before that, he always participated via videoconference or sent a video message,” Russian presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov told reporters on Monday.
Referring to the presence of the Cuban head of state in this city, Ushakov recalled that Cuba is an observer state in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) since 2020.
“I would like to note, especially – he emphasized – that Cuba is the only partner of the EEU outside the region with a similar status.”
Ushakov also reported that President Putin would hold a meeting with his Caribbean counterpart, and that the two would assess the two countries’ ties in all spheres, including politics, diplomacy and economic cooperation. “It will be an important conversation,” Vladimir Putin’s advisor said, according to a report by Sputnik.

Cuba reached, this April 26, the figure of one million international visitors received, informed Juan Carlos García Granda, head of the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur), in his account in X.
This result, he said, was achieved a few days before the start of the 42nd International Tourism Fair (fitCuba 2024), from May 1 to 5, in Jardines del Rey, dedicated to Latin America and the Caribbean and nautical products.
Previously, the National Bureau of Statistics and Information highlighted that, at the end of March, 809,238 visitors had arrived, mostly from Canada, as the first issuer, in addition to the Cuban community abroad, Russia, the United States, Germany, France, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Spain and Argentina.
Cuba aims to surpass three million visitors in 2024, a year that, according to García Granda, will see a recovery compared to 2023, and for which the conditions are in place.
On the other hand, this Monday will take place the seminar “Enhancing tourism development through innovation in community tourism”, prior to the 69th meeting of the UN Regional Commission on Tourism for the Americas, to be held on April 30.
