My father felt a great respect for Fidel and always said that there was no contradiction between faith and the principles of the Cuban Revolution, stated Gail Walker, executive director of the U.S. project Pastors for Peace and daughter of the late Reverend Lucius Walker, founder of the U.S.-Cuba Friendship Caravan, which has been undertaking solidarity work with the island since 1992.
Speaking before national and international press in Havana, the outstanding activist highlighted numerous activities taking place in honor of the Comandante en Jefe’s 90th birthday, August 13, in various U.S. states, including New York City where she lives.
One of the tributes will include placing a commemorative plaque in the Theresa Hotel, located in New York’s Harlem neighborhood and where Fidel, then Prime Minister of Cuba, stayed while attending the 15th United Nations General Assembly, in 1960. At that time the Cuban delegation was scheduled to stay at the Manhattan hotel, but was denied entry by the institution’s management. On hearing the news, African American leader Malcolm X invited the Cubans to Harlem where they were welcomed by local community members, who kept watch over the hotel day and night.
Walker noted that the project is planning to install a statue of Fidel with Malcolm X sometime in the near future.

During a press conference in Havana, yesterday August 1, Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno described the second informative meeting between Cuba and the U.S. held in Washington, July 28, to discuss compensation claims by both parties.
Talks on mutual compensation, as part of the process of normalization of relations between the two countries, are currently in their initial stage, and of a highly complicated nature, technically and legally, explained Moreno, who led Cuba’s delegation to the meeting.
He recalled that since the very first nationalizations laws were established, after the triumph of the Revolution, Cuba has always been willing to compensate foreign individuals and companies affected.
Moreno noted that agreements regarding nationalized property were reached with Canada and five European countries some time ago. Plans with the United States for compensation included a defined time frame, but the actions of the U.S. government prevented their realization.
He clarified that the July 28 meeting involved an exchange of information, specifically on the two countries’ legal frameworks, giving continuity to a first meeting on the issue held in Havana in December of 2015.
No decision has been made regarding actual negotiations on compensation, but the exchange of information will continue over coming months, Moreno said.
He noted that many elements are involved in this discussion, most importantly the U.S. blockade which remains in full force. Cuba’s claims, originally presented in 1999 and 2000, are based on rulings made by Cuban courts placing the value of material and human damages caused by the blockade at 300 billion dollars.
Washington’s claims, Moreno reported, were established by the Justice Department’s Foreign Claims S

f0013087La Paz.— On July 20, during an event to present activities organized in honor of the leader of the Cuban Revolution’s 90th birthday, Bolivian social, political and cultural organizations highlighted Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro’s contribution to global liberation struggles.

Speaking to Prensa Latina, organizing committee spokesperson, Marianela Prada emphasized Fidel’s influence on the actions and ideas of Bolivians and all those committed to the anti-imperialist struggle.

We learn from his internationalist example every day. The Bolivian people are eternally grateful to Fidel Castro and Cuba, for all their concrete acts of solidarity, such as sending medical and educational brigades to our country, she stated.

Cuban doctors have restored the vision and saved the lives of thousands of Bolivians and people all over the world. Collaborators have also helped to eradicate illiteracy in the country, added Prada.

She noted that various activities – such as cultural events, film screenings, conferences and photographic expositions – will be taking place in departments across the country including, La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Tarija, Beni.

During a press conference, the Bolivian Ministry of Culture’s director of Artistic Promotion, Max Eguivar, highlighted the importance of “honoring a great friend of Bolivia and celebrating his 90th birthday, which translates to commitment and struggle.”

The youth must learn from Fidel’s example, raise their voices and continue fighting against imperialism, he stated.
