Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, and René González, the Cuban 5, were arrested by the F.B.I. on “conspiracy” and other trumped-up charges. The real reason for their imprisonment was that they infiltrated and gathered information on right-wing Cuban-American groups in Miami in order to prevent terrorist attacks against Cuba by these groups. The Cuban 5 have been imprisoned for more than 13 years – for defending the sovereignty of their homeland.

Award-winning journalist, filmmaker, author, professor Saul Landau has made more than 45 films and written 14 books, many about Cuba. His latest film is “Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up,” about U.S. support for violent anti-Castro militants. Landau joins us to discuss the history of the Cuban Five and U.S. support for a group of anti-Castro militants who have been behind the bombing of airplanes, the blowing up of hotels and assassinations. Today they are allowed to live freely in the United States. “What did Cuba do to us?,” Landau asks. “Well, the answer, I think, is that they were disobedient, in our hemisphere. And they did not ask permission to take away property. They took it away. They nationalized property. And the United States … has never forgiven them.”

US Prize Awarded to Cuban Poet Nancy Morejon

Cuban writer and poet Nancy Morejon said she was surprised for the work/life award granted to her recently in San Francisco, California, by the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).

“It took me by surprise; I did not expect it,” the author of “Piedra Pulida” (Polished Stone) told Prensa Latina.

She said it is not a book or an essay; it is an important award that recognizes an author’s career.

Born on August 7, 1944, Morejon is one of the most prestigious writers and poets in the Island, and has devoted part of her career to study Caribbean literature and the work by Nicolas Guillen.

She is a full member of the Cuban Academy of Language since 1999, and was awarded the National Literature Prize in 2001.

She also is bestowed with the Officer of the National Order of Merit of France.

Considered the largest association around the world, LASA groups figures and institutions devoted to Latin American studies. Its main mission is promoting intellectual debate, research and teaching about the region.
