Cuba forecasts 2,600,000 arrivals of foreign visitors in 2025

By the year 2025, 2,600,000 foreign visitor arrivals are forecast, which represents an 18% increase over the estimate for the calendar year that has just ended.

This was informed by Juan Carlos García Granda, Minister of Tourism, during the first day of meetings of the Parliament’s permanent work commissions, and added that, since the beginning of 2024, there has been a downward trend in the security perception index of the destination, and the negative impact of this (visa exemption request) in the decision of European and Chilean visitors is maintained.

He emphasized the need to perfect a closed financing scheme and guarantee compliance with standards throughout the country’s tourism system.

“This,” he said, “is essential for the recovery of the sector. We must present a decent tourism product, which stimulates demand.”

The country’s main destination continues to be Matanzas, followed by Havana, the keys of Villa Clara and Ciego de Avila, and Holguin.

The Minister assured that, in the second half of the year, no new works have been invested in, but work is being carried out on those that were already underway.

He argued that 2024 has been a hard year for tourism, due to labor fluctuations, the effects on the provision of services, the lack of insurance and supplies, the migratory phenomenon in tourist operations, as well as the media campaigns against the sector in the country.

Likewise, the high prices of turbo-fuels have had an impact on these results.

However, as a positive aspect, electronic commerce in the sector is consolidated and progress continues to be made to complete the use of all electronic payment channels, “under the principle that the banking process is a fundamental premise for providing a quality service,” he added.

According to the report presented, in order to materialize foreign investment projects and boost tourism, the Strategy for the Export of Health, Wellness and Quality of Life Tourism Services was concluded, in which Cayó Bienestar and Elegua are negotiating with foreign and personalized medicine companies.

“It was approved that Vima and Meliá have importing companies and perform wholesale trade, so they will supply direct to tourist facilities,” he said.

Cuba, a popular Caribbean cruise destination

More than 800,000 cruise passengers visited Cuba last year, a figure that reaffirms the sustained growth of this sector. A total of 17 international cruise lines, with some 25 ships, currently operate in the country, including some of the most recognized worldwide, such as Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.

The exponential growth of this type of tourism is synonymous with its popularity, as was highlighted at the end of the third quarter of 2018 by Cruise Critic, the leading website for online cruise reviews, which for the first time reported Havana as the top-rated Western Caribbean and Riviera Maya destination, based on consumer reviews.

Repeated press reports indicate that representatives of several cruise companies worldwide appreciate Cuba’s exceptional character as a tourist destination, a very important basis for its increased inclusion in their itineraries.

Thus, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the only U.S. luxury cruise line authorized to offer trips to this archipelago, announced more visits during 2019 and 2020.

In the same period, Carnival Cruise Line announced it had added 23 more routes with stops in Havana, and revealed that next year it would open routes from New York, Norfolk, Virginia, and Port Canaveral, Florida.

Likewise, Silversea Cruises is set to include a route from the United States before the end of February.

Many cruise passengers come from the United States, and the number could be higher, if it weren’t for the measures adopted by their government last June, which make travel between the two countries difficult and reinforce the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.

Among the recognized attributes of the island are its cultural, patrimonial and environmental riches, as well as its safety.

The investments being made to support the development of the cruise industry in Cuba include the construction of four cruise terminals in Havana by 2024. •

MARITIME ADMINISTRATION REPORT ON CRUISE SHIP NOT AUTHORIZED TO DOCK

Since the afternoon of February 15, international media and social networks have been circulating speculations regarding a cruise ship that was not authorized to dock in the port of Havana.

The Maritime Administration of Cuba clarifies that the Grand Classica ship, operated by the Bahamas Paradise company, did not dock in the port of Havana on its first visit to Cuba because it had unilaterally modified the initially agreed activity, and did not meet the established information accuracy requirements and procedural deadlines. Authorities regret this incident and hold the operators responsible for the consequences.

Tens of thousands of passengers arrive every year to Cuba without difficulties, aboard ships of the world’s leading cruise companies and the United States, showing preferences for Cuban destinations.

Cuba reached, this April 26, the figure of one million international visitors received, informed Juan Carlos García Granda, head of the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur), in his account in X.
This result, he said, was achieved a few days before the start of the 42nd International Tourism Fair (fitCuba 2024), from May 1 to 5, in Jardines del Rey, dedicated to Latin America and the Caribbean and nautical products.
Previously, the National Bureau of Statistics and Information highlighted that, at the end of March, 809,238 visitors had arrived, mostly from Canada, as the first issuer, in addition to the Cuban community abroad, Russia, the United States, Germany, France, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Spain and Argentina.
Cuba aims to surpass three million visitors in 2024, a year that, according to García Granda, will see a recovery compared to 2023, and for which the conditions are in place.
On the other hand, this Monday will take place the seminar “Enhancing tourism development through innovation in community tourism”, prior to the 69th meeting of the UN Regional Commission on Tourism for the Americas, to be held on April 30.
