El día 13 al 17 de Noviembre se llevó acabo en Holguín Cuba el 9 coloquio por la liberación de los 5 y contra el terrorismo. Este evento es auspiciado por el Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (ICAP), y cuenta con la participación de personas de Niovebertodo el mundo. Entre los participantes se encontraban Rene González, su esposa Olga Salanueva, y demás familiares de los 4 encarcelados restantes.

La actividad estuvo colmada de muchas emociones. Alli se reafirmó el deseo de continuar la lucha, hasta lograr el pronto regreso de Los héroes cubanos a su patria, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Ramón Labanino, y Gerardo Hernández.

This past November from the 13th to the 17th the 9th colloquium for the liberation of the Cuban 5 and against Terrorism took place in Holguin Cuba.  The event took place under auspices of The Cuban Institute for friend with the peoples, (ICAP) in Spanish, delegates from around the word participated, they meet with Rene Gonzáles and this wife Olga Salanueva and family member of the 4 still unjustly held in US prisons.

Much emotion and lots of love at the colloquium was evident and a reaffirmation to continue the struggle until the Cuban heroes are freed and back in Cuba, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Ramón Labanino, y Gerardo Hernández.

John And Ken Show Protested By Latinos, As Conservative Talk Radio Program Expands To New York

A Latino group is re-launching a campaign against a talk radio show it accuses of fueling hate speech against Hispanics.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition said Tuesday it would renew its push to force the “John and Ken Show” off the air, now that the show will begin syndicating its program in New York, according to La Opiníon.

Despite a round of cultural sensitivity training, the radio personalities have built a reputation for offending people of color, the Coalition says. The hosts routinely bash undocumented immigrants on their show.

The Coalition first launched its attack on the radio duo back in 2011. Just before the passage of the California DREAM Act, the hosts read the cell phone number of immigrant rights activist Jorge Mario Cabrera on air and urged their listeners to call him. Hundreds of “John and Ken Show” fans obeyed, many leaving hateful and threatening messages, including one who said:

You illegal immigrant, piece of sh*t motherf***er. We will do everything to fight you motherf***ers until you’re all dead, you’re all motherf***ing dead.

Kobylt and Chiampou apologized for the incident and wrote in a letter to the Los Angeles Times that they hadn’t intended for their listeners to threaten Cabrera and said his cell phone appeared on his organization’s press releases.

But their response didn’t satisfy the National Hispanic Media Coalition, which says on its website:

For years John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou, hosts of “The John and Ken Show,” have terrorized and targeted Los Angeles communities, creating an atmosphere of hate, intolerance, discrimination and legitimizing hateful attitudes against members of these groups. John and Ken are known to habitually use unsubstantiated claims, divisive language, flawed argumentation and dehumanizing metaphors to shock and anger their audience.

Advertisers including General Motors and the Anaheim Angels pulled their money out of the show in response to a boycott led by Latino activists after the Cabrera incident.

Kobylt and Chiampou were suspended for seven days last year for calling Whitney Houston a “crack ho” after her death. They apologized for the remarks.

With a weekly audience of 1.2 million, the afternoon talk show is one of California’s highest rated, according to Los Angeles Magazine.

Cuba Shares what It Has, not what is Left

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 8 (ACN) Over 40 thousand Cuban professionals are currently working in 65 countries, in sectors such as health and education, as part of the island’s international cooperation based on sharing the local achievements in favor universal social development.

According to first deputy health minister Jose Angel Portal, Cuban medical cooperation has reached over 60 nations, where some 39 thousand workers are currently offering their services.

Official statistics this year say that the cooperation by Cuban doctors, nurses and other specialized personnel has allowed saving 4 million 600 thousand lives, administering 6 million surgeries and assisting 921 million patients, PL news agency reported.

The Cuban support of different countries has also allowed the setting up medical attention networks and hospitals, healthcare centers, dental clinics, rehabilitation centers outfitted with modern technology.

The Cuban Revolution, based on the principle of sharing what it has and not what it has left, offers its medical cooperation, said the official in statements to reporters this week.

Significant enough is the cooperation with Haiti, where 700 Cuban medical professionals are currently working, or with Venezuela where millions of citizens have benefited from important medical assistance programs.

Cuba has also assisted many nations in the field of education, as over 2 thousand Cubans are working in 23 countries said Education official Miriam Egea.

Up to date, the Cuban literacy methodology know as “Yes, I Can� has helped some five million 852 persons how to read and write in different parts of the world, while more than one million persons are currently taking lessons under the Cuban program, which allows students to reach elementary school level.

Thanks to the Cuban initiative, countries like Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have declared themselves free of illiteracy, while other countries have done away with illiteracy in several regions or provinces.

Haitian President Michel Martelly paid an official visit to Cuba in November. During his stay on the island he stressed “the cooperation, support and solidarity we have always received from Cuba,� where over 1 thousand 100 Haitian professionals have graduated from higher education centers.

On September 12th, 1998 five Cuban men–Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, FernandoGonzález and René González– were arrested and wrongfully placed in prison to serve two life sentences. The Cuban Five, as they are called was convicted of committing espionage conspiracy against the United States. However, they maintain that they were on assignment to watch terrorist groups throughout Miami.

Tuesday evening, at the Howard University School of Law, students and activists gathered to address The Cuban Five. The Moot Court Room was almost filled to capacity as the discussion, headed by actor and activist Danny Glover discussed the case. Nearly 100 people sat in the room anxiously awaiting every word.
The forum began with Gloria La Riva, the coordinator of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five. The audience sat in awe as Gloria spoke on the details of the case and why she feels this is a national issue that should be made more public.

“This injustice is one that needs to be stopped” were Gloria’s closing remarks.

Actor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover injected the audience with enthusiasm and passion for the case. His first remarks were ones of honor and praise to the Howard University law school and to the people of Howard University.

“[It’s a] pleasure to be here with such courageous students, thank you Howard University for having me,” said Glover.

From this remark arose a common feeling of pride amongst the crowd. He spoke about the need for justice to be brought about and there is no better time than right now.  Gerardo Hernandez, one of the men arrested with the Cuban Five, is one of Glover’s close friends and brothers. Glover’s only wish is that Howard can help in getting this case more notarized and bringing justice to these men.

The evening continued with remarks on the case from Martin Garbus, one of the country’s leading trial lawyers, Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, a professor of Government and Public Policy, Kurt Schmoke, Vice President and General Counsel of Howard University, Anderson Francois, Supervising Attorney of the civil rights clinic and Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, executive director of the partnership for civil justice fund.

Each panelist shared the same message–people must use social media to spread awareness about The Cuban Five and bring justice to these men. It is the job of the students, leaders and activists to spread awareness through social media efforts and educate others about the injustices of this case.

Irene Barnes, a Howard University Law student, said that she “found [the forum] very informative and an important topic for us to be informed on.”
