The CIGB-Mariel biotechnological complex, inaugurated October 25, is the first high-technology operation established in the Mariel Special Development Zone, a product of the joint efforts and knowledge of Cuban technologists, engineers and designers.
All are affiliated with the Esines specialized engineering services company affiliated with the BioCubaFarma enterprise group and the new CIGB-Mariel itself, were recognized in a ceremony for their design and technological conceptualization of the project, completed with optimum quality and financed with 100% Cuban capital.
During the event, presided by Party Political Bureau member and director of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), Marta Ayala Avila, as well as Oscar Treto Cardenas, from the Party Central Committee, BioCubaFarma director Eduardo Martinez Diaz stated that this treasure, of which the Cuban people is proud, was possible thanks to those who contributed, in many moments of tension, to ensuring that the highest standards were met in construction of the complex.
The young designer Lázaro Leonardo Hernández, an Esines specialist, described the experience as the most gratifying of his professional career, consolidating and giving continuity to the development of Cuban biotechnology.
Miguel Francisco Prado Muñoz, general director of Esines, added that the complex, built in just 57 months, is a huge plus for the Cuban technological industry and one of the most advanced in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The new facility’s director, engineer Catalina Álvarez Irarragorri, reported that plans for the complex include the production of vaccines and innovative drugs to treat diseases that afflict the Cuban population and of other nations, as well.
